6.2 – How To Install Child Themes

Installing a child theme is just like installing any WordPress theme. You can do this via the WordPress dashboard or via FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

Installing via the WordPress Dashboard

  • Download the child theme file. It will likely download as a zip file. This is good. If the theme file downloads as a folder full of files you can zip the folder up by right-clicking on the folder name and choosing ‘Compress’.
  • Log in to WordPress and in the admin panel go to Appearance > Themes.
  • At the top of the screen, click ‘Add New’.
  • To the right of the section title ‘Add New’ is a button titled ‘Upload Theme’. Click this.
  • Using the “Choose File” button or by drag and drop, find the zip file for the child theme.
  • Click the “Install Now” button. On completion a message will appear informing you of a successful installation.
  • Once your child theme has been installed you are presented with a couple of options in the Appearance > Themes panel:
  • – ‘Live Preview’ will apply the installed theme in a preview mode, displaying your site as it would look if the theme were active.

    – “Activate” will apply the installed theme to your live site.

  • Activate the child theme. Remember not to activate the Genesis theme. Activate one of the child themes.

Installing via FTP

  • 1. Download the child theme file and unzip it.
  • Connect to your site via FTP and navigate to your site’s wp-content/themes directory.
  • Transfer the entire child theme folder to that directory adding it as a sibling of the ‘genesis’ folder.
  • Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance > Themes.
  • In this panel you will see screenshots of the installed themes that are available for you to use. Each theme will present you with a couple of options:
  • – “Live Preview” will apply the installed theme in a preview mode, displaying your site as it would look if the theme were active.

    – “Activate” will apply the installed theme to your live site.

  • Activate the child theme. Remember not to activate the Genesis theme. Activate one of the child themes.
